OUR STORY

Blacksburg Battles Cancer began as an avenue for the Women’s Golf Association at Blacksburg Country Club to honor Ellen Hartman, a former member and avid golfer, who lost her battle with cancer. The inaugural event, a Susan G. Komen golf tournament raised $23,376. With success of this inaugural event, the group felt they could do more – and reach more people!  Cancer is not limited to women; it impacts the lives of so many, whether directly or indirectly.

Since its inception, Blacksburg Battles Cancer has steadily increased the amount of funds raised. To date, our cumulative efforts has raised over $375,000.

What started with an annual golf tournament continues to grow and add ways to donate.  We strive to be recognized as a New River Valley charitable foundation. In addition to the golf tournament, Blacksburg Battles Cancer now partners with local businesses to help raise awareness of our organization.  As we grow in the New River Valley, our goal is to add events in hopes of raising awareness and to help more individuals and their families.

There are numerous ways to get involved! Blacksburg Battles Cancer has been incredibly fortunate to have generous sponsors over the years. Many support us by participating in the annual golf tournament, with the entry fee as a contribution.  Others support our events with sponsorships at varying levels including signage, equipment, goods, meals, or drinks. You may choose to honor or memorialize a loved one with a donation.  Every dollar counts!

With 100% of the money raised given back to the community, a sampling of the recipients in years past include: Camp Kesem at Virginia Tech, Carilion Clinic Oncology Rehab, Community Health Center of NRV, Camp Special Love, NRV Senior Services Cancer Center Mobility Program, and Good Samaritan Hospice.

We are grateful for the support over the years, but the fight is not over.  We want to do so much more!  Our Community. Our Fight.

OUR IMPACT

The basic mission of Blacksburg Battles Cancer is to raise funds for cancer focused non-profit organizations that serve the local community. Each year, the BCC Charitable Foundation will select non-profit organizations that either engage in research to prevent, treat, or cure cancer or provide supportive services to cancer patients and their families.
